Unearthed: Pompeii

Discover Ancient Secrets

Curatorial Statement:

This exhibition aims to bring an experience like no other to Florida State University. Using projection technology, the artworks of the ancient city of Pompeii will come to life, allowing an audience to travel back in time two-thousand years. Not only will the works be on display true to scale, but experts in the field will also be speaking about the excavation process and the backstories of the works of art. The goal of this exhibition is to allow students who are invested in the art world, as well as faculty and community members to get to be immersed within classical art right here on Florida State’s campus. The ability to travel abroad may not be available to everyone, and I feel that it is important to gain experience within whatever field you are studying.

Objectives:

By attending this exhibition, visitors will be familiar with the characteristics of classical art and will also realize the importance of the study of ancient art and how it has impacted future civilizations throughout time. The art community of Florida State University will also be able to engage with experts in the field of excavation and classical art. Through making these connections, new career opportunities may arise for students.

Venue:

Fine Arts Museum located at the Fine Arts Building on Florida State University’s campus. The available lighting is overhead with adjustable spots along the walls. Technical needs will require a sound system with a microphone for audio, as well as speakers. Multiple projectors will also be needed to display the art onto the walls. The rooms will have to remain quite dark to allow the projections to be visible. Both the upstairs and downstairs areas will be in use.

Layout:

The upstairs area of the museum will be used in its entirety for the display of the frescoes in the Villa of the Mysteries. The frescoes will be shown in chronological order clockwise around the room. For audio, a loop will play with music as well as some description of what is occurring in the frescoes. Downstairs, other various frescoes will be shown, all in chronological order from when they were completed. In the last room of the exhibition, there will be projections showing what happened when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. There will also be a description of how all the works of art were preserved due to the phenomena of the eruption.

Promotion:

To get the word out about this event, the fine arts departments will discuss the event with their classes, and extra credit will be given for attending. Paper flyers will be handed out around the school, as well as put on bulletin boards around campus. Social media posts will go up around three weeks before the event, with count downs and videos posted to gain excitement and traction for the event.
